After over thirty years, I evolved away from my business career! I said goodbye to my 9-5 job, and I’m well on my way in what I believe is my life mission; being a life coach. I want to open up and tell my story about how I decided on this new chapter of life coaching.

My job in the Information Technologies (IT) field looked great on a resume, paid very well, had incredible benefits, and many people would have loved to be in my position.
Although it came on gradually as I hit midlife, I no longer enjoyed my work in the IT world. My work had little meaning and I simply wasn’t content. I kept thinking… there has to be something more meant for me – and it isn’t IT.
I felt stuck. It may sound corny, but I kept asking myself…
- What is my WHY?
- What is the real reason I was put here on earth?
- What gift do I have to offer the world?
Years ago my WHY was to be a mother to my two beautiful children. And when I hit midlife, my two children were grown, had graduated from college, and were independent. My husband who’s 10 years older than me had already retired. So the high demands of family and motherhood had passed, and I had time to focus on me.

For over five years, probably more like ten years, I’ve been on a journey of personal growth. Reading books, attending workshops, taking online courses, meeting with like-minded people… I did any thing I could possibly do to learn. I practiced integrating what I learned into my life.
So to add some challenge and interest to my life, a few years ago I started this blog.
My blog gives me a tool to share with the world what I learn myself on my journey of personal growth. I learn, and then share. I’ve always enjoyed writing, so blogging indeed brings me much joy.
My gut feeling has always been that my blog was taking me down a path, but I wasn’t sure where that path was going. I trusted that I was on the right path, and when the timing was right, I’d see an open door.

Why Life Coaching?
After much thought, researching and soul searching, an opportunity presented itself for me to seriously consider life coaching. Actually there was no big aha moment. I’m not even sure how I first grew curious about becoming a life coach.
Eventually it was my addiction to podcasts that kicked me into taking action. I had stumbled upon a podcast by Rhonda Britten, founder of the Fearless Living Institute.
I binge listened to all of the Master Coach Mindset with Rhonda Britten podcast episodes, and then purchased a one-on-one 30-minute laser coaching session with her.
During that session where she would coach any problem in my life, I told her how “the plan” was for me to work 1 1/2 more years, and then retire at age 55 when my husband turned the magical age of 65. But the thought of working 1 1/2 more years was daunting.
I mentioned to Rhonda that I entertained the idea of life coaching, and the next thing I knew I was in her prerequisite program for life coaching. I learned tools to help me move forward in my life. It helped me think about what was holding me back, and helped me decide how I wanted to move forward in my life with no regrets.
Two months after that, this past September, I flew out to LA for an intense weekend workshop. I was officially in the 9-month Fearless Living Life Coach Certification Program.
A few months after starting the certification program, a door opened at work and I ran through it to put an end to an era.
My own personal work with Fearless Living tools had given me the confidence and courage to take that leap of walking away from my job.
So why life coaching? Sounds cliche, but I want to help other people who feel stuck. People who need help working their way through fear that may unconsciously be holding them back from going after their dreams – or maybe they don’t even know what their dreams are. I want to positively impact lives.
Helping People Move Forward
Today, I’m over half way through the program. I have 5 clients and my coaching time with each of them has brought me great joy.
UPDATE June 2020: I graduated from the Fearless Living Institute and I’m now a Certified Fearless Living Coach.
I help my clients learn the Fearless Living tools that help them break free of fear and move forward in their lives. Wherever they are now, regardless of why they’re there, I help them move forward from that point.
I’ve witnessed my clients’ self-confidence grow, and it’s so rewarding to watch them reach their personal goals they wanted to accomplish with our coaching sessions.
“Mastering your fear means accepting it, owning it, and making it work for you instead of against you.”
Rhonda Britten
Another joy of life coaching is that as I help my clients shine a light on their path, it also prompts me to ask myself questions about my own life. I love the continuous learning and growing.
Christmas Morning Feeling
So yes, I evolved away from a career that served me well for decades. It wasn’t easy to walk away from the security it provided, but fear was not a good enough reason to not try. I’m beyond excited to be in my new chapter!
You know that Christmas morning feeling when you were a little kid? That’s what I’m feeling right now about my new “passion job”.
My WHY? It’s to make life a little better for myself and others.

Very exciting, congratulations!!
Thank you!
Life is too short for regrets so good for you! You spend more time at work than with family and friends so if possible do something that makes you happy.
That’s right! And I’m setting myself to work my hours from home (or down south during winters)!
My dear friend Ellen, it is so enlightening to watch you live fearlessly. You are an inspiration to me and so many others. I’m excited to see where this path leads and doors really have been opening for you. I am blessed to have you in my life and so will anyone be when they choose you as their life coach! Hugs.
Thank you, Rhonda. 😚
THat’s amazing how you were able to find your purpose. It takes a lot of guts to head down that road without a map.
Thank you! Baby steps made it all very doable.
Congratulations on taking a step to fulfill your dreams! That book sounds very interesting – I’ll have to pick it up.
I would love to learn more about the certification!
Hi Jae, the Fearless Living Institute has an incredible program. There’s a two-month prerequisite and then the certification program is 9 months. A minimum of 75 hours of one-on-one client coaching is required for graduation. The FL tools have changed my life, and I’m so happy to help my clients get the same results.
So blessed to have come across this post today!! Reading your story has stirred my heart and given me so much encouragement on my present journey. Congratulations on going after your passions fearlessly learning along the way!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Lucia. Enjoy your journey!
All the best! I’ve been thinking about going back to my life coach certification.
Thank you.
